Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
