The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
